              2017 Summer Student Position
The Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce operates 2 separate tourist information offices - the Port Elgin Tourist Information Office and the Southampton Visitors’ Centre.  We have received grant approval to hire for 1 summer student position (through the CSJ grant).
Our offices deal with a high volume of inquiries (from both our local community and from those further afield) and are often the first point of contact for visitors who come to Saugeen Shores and for locals looking for a wide variety of information.
The Summer Tourist Information Officer will ideally:

  • have a strong background in tourism/hospitality/events with practical experience in the field
  • be a Student enrolled in a post-secondary tourism related program (i.e. tourism & travel/hospitality/ event planning)
  • come to us with a sound knowledge of Saugeen Shores (Port Elgin, Saugeen Township and Southampton)
  • be proficient in English & French (the ability to speak other languages would be an asset) as our offices assist many visitors from across Canada and also other countries
  • possess strong organizational skills and communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • show professionalism and "grace under pressure", while displaying confidence and an outgoing personality
Typical Duties of the Summer Tourist Information Officer:
  • work weekends and through the week
  • be a team player, able to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • respond to external demands/inquiries and offer customer service mainly in English, but potentially also in the minority language (French)
  • order provincial/regional/local brochures and flyers 
  • recycle out of date tourism materials 
  • update various databases and website listings (i.e. accommodation, availability, events) 
  • community/tourism outreach efforts (i.e. setup/teardown/operation of weekly Saugeen Shores promotional booth at local summer Flea Market, acting as step on tourist information officer on our S.S. Trolley to promote our area through commentary & info, Canada’s 150th events listings, things to see & do, area history, community services)
  • procure tourism assets materials
  • promotion of area attractions (i.e. Bruce County Museum, Southampton Arts Centre, libraries, SFN Amphitheatre) & cultural programs/activities/experiences (i.e. Chantry Island Tours, Summer Music camp, local farmers markets) & special events (i.e. Canada’s 150th events, festivals, agricultural fairs, pow wow, other community events)
  • maintain/refill/update displays, shelves, self-serve kiosks, tourism binders and other assorted tourism information
  • prepare mail outs 
  • update/print flyers & grids
  • track daily inquiries, total/input tracking info to spreadsheets
  • data entry/typing
  • track retail sales of souvenir items, handle cash
  • update/research/develop tourist info (i.e. for our websites, Experience Guide, marketing efforts)
  • assist in the planning/implementation of our festivals/special events (i.e. Canada Day celebrations, Labour Day fireworks, Port Elgin Pumpkinfest, various Canada’s 150th events held throughout 2017)
  • assist with our Events Resource Centre operations (i.e. orders/returns)
  • act as a tourism ambassador and share info regarding a wide variety of tourism related topics (i.e. directions, maps, referrals to local businesses, accommodations, restaurants, attractions, weather updates)
  • other duties as required
To be considered for a CSJ grant position, you must meet ALL of the following  CSJ grant Eligibility Criteria: be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment; have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year; be a student in a secondary, post-secondary, vocational or technical program; be a  Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act2; and, be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with the relevant provincial legislation and regulations.
